5 Ways To Cosy Up Your Interior For Autumn
With the evenings drawing in and a new chill in the air, it's that time of year again when we retreat indoors and start to cosy up our homes ready for the cooler months ahead.
From rugs and textiles to candles and fireplaces, here’s some quick and cost-effective ways to update your interior for a seasonal refresh.
Add Textiles
We add extra layers on our bodies throughout the autumn and the same goes for our homes. Whether its snuggling up on the sofa with our favourite blanket or investing in some new cushion covers, autumn is all about adding texture to the home. Cosy up your bedroom with a simple throw on the bottom of the bed, or add a plush rug to soften hard flooring. Opt for different materials wherever possible – for example layer up velvet with wool for added interest and ultimate hygge appeal.
Think Intimate Lighting
With dark evenings, getting the lighting right indoors is key at this time of year. Think carefully about the types of lights you choose and where to place them in your home. You’ll want to light up darker corners to add some warmth, but only if there’s something to see; create a simple display with a shelf and a few props, add a reading chair, or style a sideboard. Choose smaller lamps over down-lighters to create a more intimate atmosphere and choose lightbulbs that give off more white/yellow light as opposed to cooler ‘blue’ tones.
Candles are also a must for the autumn and winter months, so be sure to stock up! Why not try autumn scented candles such as spiced cinnamon or burnt fig to create a truly welcoming and cosy atmosphere.
Introduce Natural Materials
Adding more natural materials can make a home feel instantly more welcoming. From wicker baskets to artisan ceramics and wooden floors, natural materials have a timeless appeal that won’t date once the season is over.
An engineered wood floor looks great all year round, but will particularly comes into its own during the cooler months, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere whilst also being warm underfoot. To create the ultimate cosy atmosphere, opt for a wood floor with a rustic grain or handcrafted texture, such as those within our Heritage Collection of handcrafted floors.
Consider Darker Paint Colours
If you dare to go dark, opting for darker shades on your walls can really envelope a space, encouraging you to curl up and relax. Use a palette of dark, dusky shades such as forest green or midnight blue, whilst keeping floors and ceilings lighter.
If you’re not ready for a big change of wall colour, consider painting woodwork darker for a more considered and interesting look.
Bring The Outside In
For a true taste of autumn, change up your floral arrangements, swapping bright coloured blooms for more subdued autumn tones – think burnt oranges, deep reds and warm browns. A simple arrangement of twigs in a tall vase can add real impact. Or place some pine cones in a glass bowl to create a seasonal centrepiece.
