How To Care For Your Engineered Wood Flooring

Engineered wood flooring is a timeless classic that brings elegance to any interior, both modern and traditional. A high-quality engineered wood floor will last for decades, but proper maintenance and care is essential to keep your floors looking beautiful as the years go by!

Here are our top tips for caring for your new – or old – wooden floor.

If It’s Wet, Keep It Away!

Although it might seem logical to clean your floor with water, regular mopping can cause lasting damage. Keep mopping to a minimum and only ever use a very dry, wrung out mop.

The same applies for spillages. Mop up any water or spilled drinks immediately, even if your flooring has a protective coating. Although engineered wood flooring is less susceptible to water damage compared to solid wood flooring, the water can still seep into the wood through prolonged exposure and cause unwanted damage.

Stick With The Slippers

Because wood is a natural material, it can be marked easily. We strongly advise keeping shoes, especially heels, away from your engineered wood floor. Likewise, never drag furniture along the wood without first placing a protective matt underneath.

We suggest using self-adhesive felt pads on the legs of tables and chairs too. If you don’t want to do this, then adding a rug is a great way to vamp up your décor while protecting your floor.

Sunlight Is Not Your Friend

Although rays of sun certainly make your room look warm and inviting, it can affect your floor’s colouring over time. Different species of wood react to sunlight in different ways. A light oak wooden floor will darken over time when exposed to the sun, whereas darker American Walnuts will gradually turn more golden. In rooms that have large windows with a lot of sun exposure throughout the day, consider rearranging your furniture or keeping the curtains closed while you’re out. This will ensure that the colour remains even across the wood floor throughout its lifetime.

Keep Nature At The Door

We recommend getting a good doormat for your front door that allows you to clean and dry your shoes before entering the house. Gravel and other debris on the bottom of your shoes can be brought in by accident, causing scratching and other types of damage to your floor.
